You run into the room at 6 am sharp and make an announcement: you made mommy breakfast in bed and need daddy’s help to carry it in. Down the hall I hear you gasp. “Oh no! The dog ate the bread from mommy’s tray!” You give the dog a time out.
My tray has a bowl of 7 blueberries, and one apple and one tangerine on a napkin. You tell me you even washed them!
Your dad carries your babbling baby brother in and we laugh when he pulls the apple to his mouth. We pass it around and share its sweetness.
And I’m in awe of this. How my body grew and sustained two lives. How I pushed through such difficult pregnancies and right past death during birth. How I tell myself I’d do it over and over again. Because the love I’ve found in my children is unmatched. It turns me inside out. It stretches me until I’m sure I will snap but then I’m able to stay awake through yet another night, make the endless snacks, wipe tears including mine, rub tummies and administer meds at 3 am. Motherhood illuminates the kind of inspiration in me that has me running to the page and pouring out words. It makes me believe I can do anything.
I’m so grateful that I get to watch your stories unfold before my very eyes.
